Captivated by the sporting success of the 300 SL (W194), which had been running since 1952, Austrian-American car salesman Max Hoffman persuaded Daimler Benz management to bring the 300 SL into serial production.

The 300 SL (W198) is a car with an innovative design. For example, the chassis is tubular, very rigid and very light (50 kg).
It was one of the first GT (Grand Touring) cars, and one of the fasttest of its time. It could reach 250 km/h.
