“1+1” is a classic promotional formula, often emblazoned in large, bold letters across the weekly brochures of local supermarkets such as Albert Heijn, Hoogvliet, or Jumbo. It also happens to be a perfect summary of life in the Netherlands: when you practise one sport, it usually turns out
to be two. Take football, for example. You first cycle to the field, complete your training session, and then cycle back home. The same goes for other pursuits: if you play music, you take your instrument on your bike to rehearsal, play for a while, and then ride home again. The more activities you have, the more you cycle. And on the rare occasions when you have absolutely nothing planned for yourself, it often ends up being the day you cycle the most.
