The saying that dogs come to resemble their owners often holds true for bicycles as well. But human psychology is complex, subtle, multifaceted, and bicycles are far easier to collect than dogs. In the Netherlands, it is therefore not unusual to own several, each forming a true, if incomplete, portrait of its owner. Among the most famous are the expendable bike, risked downtown, left out at night, and stolen
without much regret; the one reserved for friends and guests; the workhorse bike, dutifully taking the children to school and shouldering the weekly shopping; the outdoor bike, reserved for crisp autumn rides through the forest; and of course the prestigious racing bike, jealously hoarded in the basement, brought out as rarely as one unveils the very best version of oneself.
