Nicolas Journoud - Of Bikes and Men - The Surfer

A man in his fifties who looks forty, or perhaps the other way around. Sunglasses perched atop a balding head, a few damp strands of hair lifting in the breeze. A deep tan offset by three-day blond stubble, with a pale, stencil-like outline preserved around his bright blue eyes. Faint, translucent flakes of dried sea salt on his prominent cheekbones. A worn wetsuit, unzipped to the chest. Under one arm: a surfboard. Under his feet: an old cruiser bike — carrying him home, unhurried and at ease. It was this character, spotted one summer evening in 2016 on the streets of Scheveningen,1 and drawn a year later, who sparked the idea for the Of Bikes and Men series.
